Clear commitment by means of support and advice
Studying in a new country is often very challenging for refugees, who for various reasons have had to flee their homeland. In a joint effort with some of its students, Leibniz University has set up a versatile support programme that provides helpful services like clarification of admission requirements, arranging German courses, study guidance and legal advice.

The visiting student programme is aimed at all adults, irrespective of their age and formal education.
Currently, there are about 70 refugees registered as visiting students. The programme helps to overcome first obstacles and establishes initial contact with the university.
These refugees come from countries like Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, Eritrea, and Sudan.
In the summer semester 2016, half of them were enrolled in courses at Leibniz Universität Hanover, of which most were language courses at different levels.

The International Office is the point of contact both for students who wish to study for some time abroad (outgoing), and foreign students who want to come to Hannover (incoming).
In addition, a new contact office has been set up to assist refugees with study-related questions.
